One of the most common requests I get in Alpharetta is:

“I want my TV above the fireplace, but I don’t want to see any wires.”

Sounds simple.
Sometimes it is.
Sometimes it absolutely isn’t.

And the difference usually comes down to how the house was built.

The Detail Most Sales Reps Forget to Ask

When a customer calls to mount a TV above the fireplace, the key question should be:

Is the chimney built outside the house or inside the house structure?

In many homes in Alpharetta that were built 10–15+ years ago, the chimney shaft is actually on the exterior wall.

Inside the house, it looks like a flat wall with a fireplace in the middle.
But behind that drywall? Brick. Studs. No cavity space.

And that changes everything.

Why “Internal Wire Concealment” Often Fails in Older Homes

Internal wire concealment means:
• Running a power extension inside the wall
• Dropping it down to an existing outlet
• No visible wires

Sounds clean.

The problem?

Studs. Lots of studs.

In older Alpharetta homes:
• There is no outlet above the fireplace
• The nearest outlet is usually off to the side or near the floor
• The wall above the fireplace is heavily framed

Running a thick extension cord with a molded plug through multiple studs is extremely difficult — sometimes nearly impossible without opening large sections of drywall.

That’s why “internal” gets sold…
But on site, reality looks different.

(You can explain more about internal systems in your separate blog article and link to it here.)

The Smarter Solution: Installing a New Outlet

In these older homes, installing a proper outlet above the fireplace is usually the cleaner and safer option.

Why?

Because instead of trying to force a thick extension cord through multiple studs, I can:
• Drill small access holes strategically
• Use a long flexible drill bit
• Run proper electrical wire
• Tie into an existing outlet for power
• Install a new recessed box behind the TV

Sometimes I need to cut a small technical access opening in drywall to drill through a stud.
But that’s minor compared to trying to fish a bulky plug through framing.

And the final result?

Clean. Professional. No visible wires.

How Newer Alpharetta Homes Are Different

In newer builds, contractors often:
• Pre-install an outlet above the fireplace
• Build the chimney shaft inside the home structure

When the chimney is built internally, there is often empty cavity space around it.

That makes everything easier.

If there’s no outlet:
• I can drill from below
• Use the open cavity space
• Run wiring cleanly
• Or perform standard in-wall concealment

In these homes, internal concealment is usually straightforward.

The Real Takeaway for Alpharetta Homeowners

Not every fireplace wall is built the same.

Before promising “hidden wires,” you need to know:
• How old is the house?
• Is the chimney exterior or interior?
• Is there an outlet above the fireplace?
• How many studs are blocking the path?

In Alpharetta, especially in neighborhoods with 10–20 year old homes, this detail matters more than people realize.

What I Always Recommend

If you want a clean look above your fireplace:
1. Send photos before the appointment.
2. Clarify chimney type.
3. Don’t assume internal concealment is always possible.
4. Consider adding a dedicated outlet — it’s often the better long-term solution.

A clean installation is absolutely possible.
It just requires the right approach for the structure of the home.
